How to use a Japanese ramen ticket machine
At most popular ramen shops in Tokyo, you order by buying a ticket at the entrance — not by speaking to a server. Here's the machine you'll meet, and how to beat it on your first try.
What is a ramen ticket machine?
The ticket machine — in Japanese 券売機 (kenbaiki) — is a cash-operated (and increasingly IC-card-operated) kiosk near the entrance of most ramen shops. You choose your dish, pay, and collect a small paper ticket. Inside, you hand that ticket to the counter staff, who then cooks and delivers your bowl.
Why does almost every ramen shop use one? Three reasons: (1) it removes the billing step so staff can focus on cooking, (2) it prevents ordering mistakes and late-night payment disputes, and (3) it keeps cash handling out of the kitchen, which matters at counter-only shops where the chef is working noodles by hand.
For a traveler, the ticket machine is the single biggest "test" of a Tokyo ramen visit. Get past it and the rest is easy — you sit down, hand over the ticket, and eat.
The three types you'll encounter
Not every ticket machine looks the same. There are broadly three generations, and which one you face depends on the shop's age and its popularity with foreign visitors.
1. Classic button machine
Rows of physical buttons, each labeled with a dish name in Japanese and sometimes a price. Older shops and Jiro-style shops almost always use this. The photo or menu image is often taped next to the machine rather than on the buttons themselves — you look at the photo, find the matching Japanese text, then press the button.
2. Touch-panel (Japanese only)
A full-screen tablet-style display. Faster for the shop to update menus, but harder if you can't read Japanese — there's usually no English toggle and the photos may be small. You tap through categories (main dish → toppings → extras) before confirming.
3. Touch-panel with English or photo mode
The friendliest version. A tablet with a language toggle (English / Chinese / Korean) and large photos for each item. Shops that get a lot of foreign visitors — Rokurinsha, Ichiran, and most chains — use this. If you see a flag icon in the top corner of the screen, that's your language switch.
Step-by-step: classic button machine
- Look at the photo menu first. It's usually taped to the wall next to the machine. Decide what you want before you touch anything.
- Insert payment. Cash first — the slot accepts ¥100 and ¥500 coins and ¥1,000 notes. Some machines also accept ¥5,000 and ¥10,000, but many don't. If the machine has a blue IC sensor on top, you can also tap your Suica or Pasmo.
- Press the button for your dish. The signature bowl is often top-left (biggest button, most expensive), but this isn't a rule. When you press, a small paper ticket prints from the slot at the bottom.
- Press additional buttons for toppings — extra noodles (替玉 kaedama), egg (煮玉子 nitamago), char siu (チャーシュー chaashuu). Each prints its own ticket.
- Collect your change from the coin slot, usually at the bottom-right.
- Take all the tickets inside and hand them to the first staff member you see when you sit down.
Step-by-step: touch-panel machine
- Tap the language icon in the top corner — usually a flag, or the word "ENGLISH" or "言語". If you don't see one, the machine is Japanese-only; open Google Translate on your phone in camera mode and point it at the screen for a live English overlay.
- Insert payment first. Most touch-panel machines require you to insert cash or tap an IC card before you can select a dish. Some newer ones take credit cards (look for a swipe or tap terminal).
- Select your main dish. Tap the photo or English name. The machine highlights your choice.
- Add toppings or a set. Some shops default-add a half-size rice or side. Skip if you just want the bowl.
- Confirm. The screen shows a total and a "確定" (kakutei, "confirm") button. Tap it.
- Collect tickets and change.
Payment methods — what actually works

Rule of thumb:carry enough yen in ¥1,000 notes to cover your bowl, and have a Suica or Pasmo charged as backup. Don't plan on a credit card working.
Common problems and how to fix them
"I can't read any of the buttons"
Use your phone. Open Google Translate, switch to Camera mode, point it at the machine. You'll get a live English overlay of the Japanese labels. This is what most experienced travelers actually do — even for classic button machines.
"I bought the wrong ticket"
Before you sit down, show the ticket to a staff member and say "machigaemashita"(間違えました — "I made a mistake"). They can usually refund or swap. Once you've sat down and the food is being cooked, it's too late.
"The button for the dish I want is dark or won't press"
That means sold out (完売 kanbai). Specialty items often sell out mid-service. Pick another dish from the lit buttons. This is normal — it doesn't mean the shop is closing.
"The machine took my money but gave nothing"
Don't panic. Call over a staff member and point at the machine. Say "sumimasen" (excuse me). They have a key to open it. This is uncommon but happens — especially with older bills.
"There's a line behind me and I'm panicking"
Step aside. Let the person behind you go, then reset. Japanese queue culture is patient — no one will be visibly annoyed, and the staff will help you when it quiets down. Rushing leads to wrong orders.
Reading the Japanese labels
A small vocabulary gets you through almost every machine. These are the terms that matter:

Try these shops first
The easiest way to get comfortable with a ticket machine is to visit a shop that uses a foreign-friendly version. Here's where to start:
- Rokurinsha (Tokyo Station) — touch-panel with English toggle and photos. Inside Tokyo Station Ramen Street, the most tourist-friendly setup in Tokyo.
- Ichiran (Shibuya) — classic machine, but every button has an English label and a photo. The individual-booth ordering removes interaction pressure entirely.
- Afuri (Roppongi) — touch-panel with English and vegan options. Clean, modern, rarely intimidating.
- Kikanbo (Kanda) — classic button machine with English-labeled spice levels. Great for a first "proper" Tokyo ramen machine experience.
- Fuunji (Shinjuku) — classic button machine with a big photo menu on the wall. One button matters (the signature tsukemen); easy.
Once you've done one of these, every other ticket machine in Tokyo will feel familiar.
